Authorship of the Eikon basilike was originally attributed to Charles I, but according to Madan (pp. 125-33) it was written by John Gauden who probably included some authentic writings of the king. Printer's name from Madan; place of publication from Wing. Frontispiece signed: Guil: Marshall sculpsit. Signatures: Ap2s B-Ip1sp2s Kp2s Lp4s. Includes a portrait of Charles II as Prince of Wales, bound between pp. 168-169. Madan identifies this as the 17th edition, third state; in this issue the word "affairs", p. 1, line 3, is so spelled; the "Prayers" and "Epitaph" have been added to this issue, unpaginated but with continuous register. Copy imperfect, lacking the engraved "Explanation of the emblem"; tightly bound. Reproduction of the original in the Bodleian Library, Oxford.
